D = Distraction
When the elder is found wandering, he/she may already be in a state of confusion and anxiety. Therefore, if the caregiver tries to stop the wandering behavior, it may be counterproductive to keep trying to help the elder with logic. Instead, the caregiver can try to distract the elder by engaging him/her with other topics, such as treating him/her to his/her favorite food. This will make the elder more willing to follow the caregiver's instructions to go home.
