One of the reasons why cognitively impaired elders may engage in wandering behavior is because they are bored, and there are no meaningful activities for them to do and spend time doing. Spending too much of the day bored or just watching TV can be detrimental to the patient. The patient should be given a schedule, preferably one that includes some of the patient's favorite activities. As the patient becomes accustomed to the schedule and knows the goals of each day, the wandering behavior may decrease.
