One of the reasons why a person may experience wandering behavior is a loss of orientation. Disorientation is a person's perception of reality, including day and night, time and place, and the patient may be confused. The person may be disoriented or may not recognize his or her own home. Family members and caregivers can engage in more reality-oriented activities with the patient. For example, they can review the present time with the patient, and guide the patient to notice whether it is day or night, what the weather is like, what season it is, and where he/she is now. Larger and more visible monthly calendars or reality-oriented versions can also be used at home to make the patient pay more attention to the date.
