Some people with cognitive impairment often ask to go home, but the problem is that they are already at home, so how can they be taken “home”? This adds to the stress of both the patient and the caregiver. Why do people who are already at home cry out to be taken home? There may be a number of reasons:
- They don't recognize their current place of residence
- Recently moved to a new place (e.g. residential care home)
- Feeling down in the dumps
- They may want to go back to their childhood home or want to see their friends and relatives.
- “Home” may refer to a more stable and comfortable time in the patient's life.
