If the elderly show the following behaviors, it indicates that the elderly may have a tendency to wander, and the carers should pay more attention to the elderly and take measures to prevent them from wandering away as soon as possible:
- Often expresses a desire to go home.
- Frequent pacing without a purpose.
- Often show a desire to return to previous duties, e.g. to go back to work, to go out for a cup of tea, to pick up children from school, etc.
- Disorientation in familiar surroundings, e.g. mistaking home for a hospital; going to the toilet at tea time and not being able to locate where they are sitting.
- Taking extra time when going out, e.g. it normally takes one hour to go out to buy groceries, but now it takes two hours to go home because you have to find your way on the street.
