Appropriate environmental cues can help reduce the risk of wandering. Some people with cognitive impairment stay at home alone and like to wander aimlessly around the house. Whenever an elderly person walks up to the front door without being stopped, there is a high probability that he or she will open the door and leave the house on his or her own. Signs or messages such as “Please stay at home” or “If you have to go out, please call your family” can be posted at the front door as a line of defense to remind elders to stay at home and avoid going out on their own.
