If elders have wandering behavior, caregivers need to pay extra attention to home safety and take appropriate measures to prevent the problem before it occurs:
- Remove clutter from the home and keep passageways clear to minimize the chance of tripping.
- Hide items related to going out, e.g. shoes, coats, keys, handbags, etc.
- Post signs such as “Stop”, “No Entry” and “Closed” at the front door to signal the elderly to stop walking.
- Decorate the front door in a way that it does not look like a doorway, e.g. painting the wall the same color, putting up wallpaper or hanging large paintings, etc.
- Install a sensor alarm at the front door to sound when someone opens the door.
- Put a lock on the gate at a higher or lower position so that it is difficult for the elderly to open it.
